Things they will never know

... Have you thought about the things your kids will possibly never know?

My kids will most likely never know..
  • What an a-Z is (think you call them Gregorys here) anyhow a road map as they will either use Maps on their iPhone or by the time they drive Sat Nav will be in built in all standard cars
  • They will never buy a Music CD (its another 7/8 yrs before they start the music thang) and certainly won't watch VHS video in their life
  • They will never know there was once a time when people whispered if they saw two men holding hands walking down the street and gasped if they dared to kiss..
  • Will they ever own a phone with buttons? I doubt it.. almost all their devices will be touch screen in a few years
  • My kids will not have the joy of playing in a darkroom processing photos, no doubt that will be an expensive archaic and daggy thing to do..
  • Once upon a time a night out involved just dancing and a bit of alcohol.. oh the things they will see (I have seen them too and have no issue with it but there was a time when underage drinking was rebellious enough)
Its not that I am upset by this or bothered in any way its just amazing to see how fast things are changing.. What are your kids not going to know that were such a large part of your life?

A trio of Grateful

I've got 3 gratefuls that just jump up and down saying pick me, pick me this week.. Life is feeling like an open space....

I have had a week of sick kids, not just a little sick but very sick.. soaring temperature, emotional wrecks with no energy.. joyous I tell you BUT it has made me grateful for the fact that really if I look back over the past few years we don't actually get sick too often so I am grateful for that and thinking about all the parents out there with kids that are really battling like my friend Louise did with her son Bill

I have had a project that I have been working on for over 6 weeks that looks like it may have to be scrapped and I feel pretty deflated by that BUT I am grateful I have my fabulous Creative Team to bounce things off and we came up with some fab ideas to still use a lot of the ideas created and make it better in so many areas for our sellers

Lastly I am over the friggin' moon that an off hand comment in a private e mail between Emily and I has resulted in us finally meeting face to face and the gorgeous gal becoming part of my DTLL Family.. she will be pottering about on our Facebook Page, Playing on Pinterest and connecting with you on all the other social networks. I can't wait for her to take over one of our weekly newsletters as she has such fab taste and she will of course still be on her blog The Beetle Shack

I love how Down that Little Lane is shaping up.. we are only 6 months old and have already become such a fab little community. My ultimate dream was to create a place where our sellers felt special, knew they were supported by me and had a our team behind them ensuring they got the best exposure we could give them and with what we have gained already and the things that are happening over the next few months I am really fulfilling that promise which makes me pretty proud... am I blowing my own trumpet? Maybe a bit but I blame it on Kelly.. she told me too!!

What are you grateful for this week? Do you ever blow your own trumpet? have you met Emily before?.. you should do all three this week.. I double dare ya x

Take me to Elwood..

If you happen to be Elwood bound you must pop Down that Little Lane.. no not ours but the one that leads to Naughts and Crosses.. they are at 104 Ormond Road, Elwood, VIC 3184. You can of course by everything they have in store on DTLL but I am sure Louise would love you to pop in and visit...

Q&A with our Giveaway

A few of you may know Suzie.. she's a hottie with talent.. I like her lots.. secretly hoping her talent will pass to me if we converse enough!!. For those of you who don't here's a bit more about her..

Why did you choose your business name?

I chose Urban Road as my business name for a few reasons. I came up with "Road" first because to me art is a journey, my style and subject matter are always changing and evolving as I experiment with new techniques. The "Urban" part simply a reflection of my surroundings and where I draw my inspiration. Plus I thought they were catchy together and the domain name was available LOL.

What have you most enjoyed in your career so far?

It is so cool to make living doing something that I absolutely love!! Sounds simple but I just love what I do, and I love the flexibility it gives me to work around organising the kids & home stuff.

Have you had any major highlights, personal or business in the last few years?

Some of the highlights would have to be the people I have met and the opportunities I have received. Invitations to design & work on other about to launch next month. Very exciting!!!

What inspires or motivates you?

Everything!!! No seriously, I get asked this a lot. I am always looking for my next masterpiece, so it is always on my mind and everything has potential.

..and lastly tell me one thing about yourself that you love but has nothing to do with business.

I love date nights with my Hubby...I spend a lot of evenings working but every other Friday or Sat night (which ever one works) the kids go to Nanna's for a sleep over we go out for dinner & a movie (I love the movies) bit of a sci fi fan, also keen on the chic flicks (hubby's not though). And I love hanging out just the two of us drinking wine & SLEEPING IN!!

I love it... apart from when I am sleeping and recently I discovered showering in semi darkness at the end of a day... oh should try it..

What would be your be all and end all item or design in a house?

And the winnner is...

Q&A with our giveaway

Why did you choose your business name?

When I first started, my business is my own name "HuiyiTan". I just thought my name is quite unique, if I use that as my business name, no one will mix it with anything else. When choosing the name for my facebook fan page, I used "BehindTheShowcase". The reason is that I am a very shy person, who is not good speaking in public. I enjoy working/ hiding behind the showcase and let my work speak for me. Recently I also use it as my business name. Obviously, I want to hide my name as well, lol!

What have you most enjoyed in your career so far?
Being able to design and make what I like and sell them is the most enjoyable thing in my career so far :)

Have you had any major highlights, personal or business in the last few years?

I have a few.

The first one is in the summer of 2003, about two months after I finished my bachelor degree in environmental design, I decided to change my major to jewellery design. Since that, I've never looked back.

The second one is in the summer of 2009 when I sold my first piece of jewellery online. That is the beginning of my handmade business journey.

The most recent one is about 2.5 months ago, I made a set of pencil jewellery for the countess of Faber-Castell. She wore the jewellery to attend an event in March this year in Melbourne, Australia. This is a great encouragment for me :)

What inspires or motivates you?

Being myself. Whenever I design and make a piece of jewellery, I will ask myself if no one likes it, will I love to wear it myself? If the answer is yes, then I will be confident to present it to my audience. If not, it's not going to work.

..and lastly tell me one thing about yourself that you love but has nothing to do with business.

At the moment, I am working 40 hours a week as an interior designer and devote all the rest of my time after 9-5 to my jewellery. There is no holiday or TV time for me for the past 3 years. So I would love to have my own workshop and be able to run my jewellery business all day long. I am working very hard towards this next step and planning to do that soon. After that, I would love to have an assistant to help my administration work. I have so many ideas about my jewellery and haven't got enough time to make all of them. I feel very excited for the future, everyday is a gift :)
