Q&A with our Giveaway

When did you start your business and how did it come about?

I started almost 2 years ago.  I worked/ran for our family business in Adelaide for 16 years and when my parents decided to move to Tasmania to be with my sister who was expecting her first child, I was left thinking 'what now?'.  I was looking forward to being an Aunty (I can't have children of my own) and set about shopping like a crazy person to spoil the new baby.  My sister didn't know what she was having so everything had to be neutral and I found it quite hard to find unique items for them.  I started researching materials and floating ideas with my sister (who is the truly artistic person in our family) and thought 'I'll just make a few things and see what happens'.  In the mean time, my partner and I moved to Victoria and I decided to actually give it a go and made a few bookends, mobiles and money boxes and listed them on a handmade website.  I made a few sales and made the decision to open my own website and stock, along with my own handmade items, the great kids toys and clothes I'd come across while shopping for my new nephew.

Why did you choose your business name?

I actually wanted Ziggy Pickles as Ziggy was one of my nicknames when I was a kid but it was already taken!  The store is in the UK but I didn't want to copy it so I chose Ruby.  Big mistake though - I get called Ruby all the time, as people think it's my name.

What have you most enjoyed in your career so far?

The learning curve.  This couldn't be more different from my previous career and I am the most un-crafty person alive so the learning process has been amazing but sometimes frustrating.  Everything takes me longer.  The picture I have in my head can take a few goes to get right when trying to make a new item as all the materials are things I've never worked with before.  After 2 year though, it is much easier and I know my limitations.

Have you had any major highlights, personal or business in the last few years?

No major highlights but I must say that every time a customer orders a handmade or custom item is a highlight for me!

What inspires or motivates you?

I'm inspired by new fabrics and materials and making things that aren't mainstream.  I don't follow trends, which could be a mistake, but I like that point of difference.

and lastly tell me one things about yourself that you love but has nothing to do with business..

I like that I'm adaptable.  Change doesn't bother me, I just pick up and move on.
