Seller in the Spotlight : Rustic Coast

Every few weeks we will put on of our gorgeous sellers in the spotlight and share with you a little about them and their business.

::

This week we introduce you to the lovely Suzannah Williams from Rustic Coast.

How did you start your business?
Started my business by chance in 2007. A friend of mine had bought some furniture at auction and I thought how nice it would look with a lick of paint. A week later my husband bought a watering can on ebay and I wondered if I could turn a profit buying furniture at auction, painting it and then selling it on ebay? After many failures at auction I finally bought a piece for $10, did it up and listed it for 99c…..it sold for $385! I spent the next 3 years learning how to restore, strip and paint furniture. I did several courses including upholstery and made many, many mistakes. In 2010 I launched Rustic Coast with a small collection of new furniture which I designed and which I have added to over the years. I also continue to restore and paint old furniture.

What inspires you?
Long walks, the coast and travel. Restoring and painting the old furniture helps me design the new pieces.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?
I love the weathered oak desk/dressing table but I'm very excited about a beautiful old oak sideboard from Cairo which I'm currently working on.

What has been your favourite recent purchase?
An enormous bunch of daffodils!  I love their smell which takes me straight back to childhood and a cottage garden in the English countryside.

What is your favourite holiday destination?
Who needs to go on holiday when you live in Sydney?! Every weekend is a holiday……bush walks, the beach, friends. But it would be nice to get away from the kitchen sink…….South America looks nice!

What do you wish people cared more about?
Other people.

At Rustic Coast you will find a simple collection of hand painted antique and vintage furniture for both coast and country living.
They also have a stylish range of new furniture, designed and made exclusively for Rustic Coast.

You can view there incredible full range here.

Let's Make It : Picnic Time

With picnic season upon us, what better time than now to get yourself organised with these adorable picnic baskets!

The older kids will love to help, and the little ones can help with filling the baskets with yummy food.

A lovely family day out just got a little but more special...

Materials Needed: Free Printable Template, posterboard or extra thick butcher paper 18″ x 24″ for each bucket, stanley knife (or scissors if you aren’t worried about straight lines.) Also grab some cute little paper bags and napkins.

Step 1: Print out free printable (click here to download) and cut it out.
Step 2: You trace the template four times onto the 18″ x 24″ heavy paper. Starting in one corner trace the template with the handle at the top and facing inward. Flip it like a mirror image and trace again. Flip it from the bottom and trace again. Trace it to the side one last time.
Step 3: Once it is traced cut it out.
Step 4: Take the two sides with the slits and slip them over the corresponding handle to create a sweet little picnic basket.
Step 5: Fill with goodies and serve to your guests.

Head over to Oh Happy Day for the full tutorial (including photo instructions).

Seller in the Spotlight : The Inspired Paddock

Every few weeks we will put one of our gorgeous sellers in the spotlight and share with you a little about them and their business.

::

Meet Fiona Shortis from The Inspired Paddock.

How did you start your business?

The Inspired Paddock came to life last year after a trip to my sister's farm.  With a ute load of rusted barbed wire and old timber palings from the stables - back to Sydney I went full of ideas.  Initially I was making wire pieces and board games for myself, then friends wanted them, then I did some local markets and school fairs and before I knew it I had a website and a shopfront on DTLL.
Luckily for me, my husband has more power tools, work benches, saws and nail guns than he knows what to do with, it seemed a waste for me not to be using them too!
I do love working "on the tools", but I'm equally as happy on the sewing machine or with a needle and thread in hand, and from this has come my newest addition into the paddock, a range of Wall Banners, some on linen, but most are wool felt - pitched at the kids and "tweens" of this world!

What inspires you?
I grew up on a dairy farm in East Gippsland so I have a deep love for the country. I find a lot of inspiration from the beautiful natural things that surround us. I am forever finding old bits and pieces and wondering what I can turn them into! I adore spending time back in the country as this is where the real treasures lie and where I feel truly at home.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?
My favourite piece in The Inspired Paddock range is easily the Chess board......shame I don't even know how to play!!!!

Where would your dream holiday be?
My Dream holiday would be golfing, drinking and laughing my way around Ireland with my husband and my mad fun golfing mates!

Do you have a favourite book?
Favourite Book - clearly don't know me well to ask that question....books, what are they?? Next to my bed is a pile of home mags and a needle and thread!

If you could invite 5 people (dead or alive) to dinner, who would they be and why?
My husband (of course), Miranda Kerr (for him), Adam Scott (love golf and he is easy on the eye too!), Ricky Martin (he can sing and dance all night) and Hamish/Andy (I'm sure they count as 1 person) for entertainment.

The Inspired Paddock brings to you a unique collection of traditional board games and decorative barbed wire pieces to adorn your home, indoors and out. All hand crafted and created in Bayview on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Fiona's pieces are all made with rustic simplicity, each piece taking on a life of it's own due to the natural weathering of the timbers and barbed wires.
Fresh into the paddock is a collection of wall banners. Available for order now are the customised "Postcode Deer Banners". These are hand stitched wool felt on Vintage French mangle cloth, a stunning addition to any space!
There is also a fun range of wool felt banners which look fantastic in the kids bedrooms or baby's nursery.
"I hope you find some "inspiration" for your home here in my paddock, happy grazing!" says Fiona.
You can view the full range of amazing Inspired Paddock pieces here.

How does your garden grow?

I would love to have a green thumb... and perhaps there's a hint of green there, but time restraints prevent me from being a full on gardener.

As a child, I loathed gardening... dirt, worms, filth - ew!  But now, I appreciate the beauty of a garden and I marvel in growing my own herbs and vegetables.  An afternoon of pottering around the garden is now my idea of heaven.

How does your garden grow?

For the love of eating : Salsa Verde

Salsa Verde.  Such a versatile little sauce.  Fish or Meat - this special sauce is a beautiful accompaniment for both...  Or just cut up some fresh vegetables and get dipping!

Today, Guy from Bondi Harvest shares with you his recipe.  YUM!

Pinterest Picks : For the walls (kids edition)

I used to spend money on me.  Any spare cash would go to filling up my wardrobe or adorning my home with a lovely something new.  Since having children though, all I want to do is spend my money on them and especially doing up their bedroom.

While our bedroom is pretty much the same as it was a couple of years ago, in that time my children have had about 4 bedroom "makeovers".  I can't get enough!

And what better way to give a fresh new look than by new and wonderful things to adorn their walls!
